Leaving DeviantArt

Posted on Thursday, June 15, 2023
After ten years, I've decided to stop using my DeviantArt page completely and nuke its gallery.

Broken and poorly maintained after an ill-conceived redesign, DeviantArt has become harder and harder to use, and the point of no return was reached when its support of AI-generated content flooded everyone's feeds along with emboldened art theft accounts. DeviantArt is simply no longer fun or easy to use.

It's also clear to me that people are leaving the site en masse. I would regularly check my notifications to see that 10 people had added one of my drawings to their favourites, but the total number actually went down. Of course, people remove things from favourites or close their accounts all the time, but to have it regularly happen in such large numbers? It really recontextualizes the constant begging from DA itself to please sign up for Core again, these constant discounts aren't going to last forever, you know!

I have many other places to post my art, not least of all this website that I put a lot of love into. I hope you'll all use it, or at least follow me on the likes of Pixiv and Pillowfort, which I'm planning to support for the foreseeable future. (There is also Twitter, but you know...)

As of now, I've removed all references to my DeviantArt page from the site. I've also added a link to my Discord server for those who want to hang out.

Ultimately, social media sites are always going to degrade. The original owners will want to sell their profitable idea, and either in anticipation of that or in the wake of the suits taking over, what made the site so inviting will gradually erode. I think it's best to embrace these sites while they work well, but always keep in mind how fleeting they are. And at the end of the day, it's important to have a place of your own that you can count on. That's why I made this website. No matter what else happens, this will always be a home for my art.
